a family reunionPersonally I must apologize to all mini-van moms. Yes I used to secretly dislike you driving in front of me, and I could not see around your vehicle. I vehemently said I would never ever have a mini-van. Now I must apologize because the verdict is in and I LOVE it! Why didnt anyone tell me how much room I would have. I love to be able to sit in back with the kids and watch the dvd's and just hang with them, while Larry does the driving. I love how the kids can choose where they sit and do not fight over seats. I love that I can unbuckle and move around. It is awesome. Vitaly is like a used car salesman and has to show anyone that is interested every aspect of the van. He has had to show me where some things are in fact!
So this weekend we packed up the kids and headed to a family reunion on my husband's side of the family. Unfortunately it had been quite a few years since I had attended one. It was wonderful seeing everyone and they adored Oksana. She is very loved and such a lucky little girl. Nikolai and Vitaly got to play with many second cousins and had a blast. What a blessing to be able to meet them and know they are surrounded by people that will always be a part of their family!
Leanna~

Its a... Mini vanWell we did it. We added one used minivan to our houeshold (or at least we signed up for one). We dont actually have it yet as it was still getting detailed and needs to be delivered (it is about 75 miles away). It is black ( my preferred color) and has a DVD and quad chairs and power seats (much needed due to the height differential of dh and myself). So it covers the basics. Vitaly is sooo excited. He can not wait until it arrives later in the week , at least that is the plan.
Here is a picture
So I guess it is official- I have become a suburbia/soccer/cheerleader mom. Who would have thought that was in my future, only 5.5 years ago! Leanna~

Nikolai- Yeah!
Nikolai singing again...I like Kissing girls...
I love being a mom!!!!
Leanna glasses and three month updateThree months Oksana has been home and she has been a dream. She is such a happy and easy-going little girl. She has been through so much recently and was a complete trooper. She barely needed her pain meds and is right back eating (or should I say picking at) her regular food. We are working on getting her to try and say more sounds but we are not having great success. Her favorite (and one of her only) word is MOM! She says it over and over and over whenever I am around. It represents a question mark I think. We are also working on getting her to hold her mouth closed and to pucker up and use her lips. It must have felt very strange to have so much change in your mouth in 3.5 months.
She also likes to float on her back and lay in the water on her belly. The only problem with the water is trying to get her to remember to close her mouth!
The boys are having a great summer. They really liked helping dad with the playset updates. We were recently told that Vitaly needs glasses- sigh. Three things I was hoping the kids would not have to deal with (since they are not Larry and I genetically related- allergies, glasses and bad teeth needing braces. So Vitaly and I headed to the optical store to see what they had. I had to get a pair myself - Larry had to superglue my old ones because the metal bridge broke off-talk about laughable I had planned on buying a pair in Ukraine becuase you can get them very cheap! I just waited to long and ran out of time. (how can one run out of time after being in Ukraine for 3.5 weeks!) . Of course Vitaly wanted the most expensive ones, because they had a power ranger sticker on the frame. So I decided, we would go somewhere else when dad was with us to make sure they didn’t have anymore ranger frames in plain view. Same frames without sticker= $60.00 cheaper.
Leanna jealous of SAHMI am so jealous of all SAHM (stay at home moms)
Now many SAHM have no idea why many of us moms do work but most of the time finances play the largest role,
Adoption costs approximately 10-50K per adoption depending on how you do it. I went CHEAPO route and independent, Lets still say that after three adoptions I could have easily bought my first home again!
Anyway that was my choice and therefore I must work to ensure my children have what they deserve like a college education and food on the table.
So I am jealous after being home almost two weeks with Oksana and the boys that I must go back to the daily grind. I really like being a temporary SAHM.
By the way I had HUGE projects planned while I was off. TIme to repaint Oksana's room to a girlie theme and clean out every closet. Well that didnt happen in the long run. Larry was able to do one project which was to fix the kids wood playset out back and stain it to give it a new feel. That did work out and Larry gets a plus ONE for projects done and I get the big fat ZERO.
Maybe in the fall....

a bit of advice for the newbies (those waiting to adopt)Here is a list of thought I posted a few years back( with a few additions) but maybe it might still relate today.
1. NAC- Remember to be courteous, friendly, and dress nicely. Think of it as, at minimum, a meeting with your boss.
2. Do not compare the US with the conditions in Ukraine. They know we have it better and do not need to hear this over and over. If there is no airconditiong then purchase a fan. Leave it for the next couple or your host. Yucky toliets? Make do or hold it. They live with these conditions everyday. I made sure I had hot water. I just stressed I would pay the difference for lodging with hot water.
3. You will see trees painted with white everywhere.
4. Follow your facilitator and translator's advice. This is their job so be courteous and listen.
5. Dress comfortably. Why try to worry about fitting in- because u will not most of the time! You are an American and when u open your mouth it will be obvious. So be happy and wear your favorite outfits and be comfortable. jeans and sneakers are fine! And white clothes are not a good option since you cannot clean it easily.
6. Respect the people around you. Yep, it might be different then you are used too, but remember you are a guest in their country and their life. So, enjoy and laugh with the locals. Do not be rude or snotty. It does nothing for the good of the world.
7. Try the local food and drink. Why not live and learn the culture. You will have the american food again very soon.
8. Take your shoes off at the door. This is a tradition in people's homes. If u have a favorite pair of slippers /or socjs bring them. You will fit right in.
9. Bring toliet paper. You will not know where it might be needed and it WILL be needed. Always bring "extra' just in case.
10. If you have time in Kyiv, then visit EVERYTHING you can! Go shopping and buy lots! You might not get the chance to shop and to get the matruska doll again- so buy now. A word of the wise if you like something buy it time is of the essence. Everytime I have gone I regret not buying an item I "might return for"
Ideas of Things to buy:
Traditional clothing in different sizes, stacking dolls, Ukrainian painted eggs, ornaments, linens, books, painted cutting boards, painted pictures of the city/cities.
Also, see all you can about the history of Kyiv. These are the images you will relate back to your children.
11. Respect your translators and tip them well. This is their job and they are very hard- working. Especially, if they spend their whole day sight seeing with you. This is not required, but I bet they are doing it because they like you! So do not forget them in the end.
12. Take one luxury item with you. This is my personal advice, but I did it three times, and never regretted it! My luxury item was a small travel pillow from Walmart. They take extra space, but were worth it for me and Dh.
13. Live like the locals if it is available. Why not stay a few days in a flat? It is actually very fun and so much cheaper then some hotels.
14. Go to the market... on your own. What an adventure.
15. Respect and tip anyone who has offered you their flat or been helpful. Give a small gift to all. Bring some small tokens. We brought rolls of lifesavers and gave them to the children hanging around the flat. They loved it. We also brought some USA plastic cups for the hostess and some other US themed odds and ends ( towels, a tshirt etc..which she loved).
16. Nights can be very boring. Bring something to pass the time. I recommend cards, yathzee, books and a DVD player.
17.In June, bing cherries were in season. They were everywhere. Everyone brought us some to eat. If the you are offered food or drink go ahead and try it.
18. Drink lots of water. But you need to find the non gas water. I think one was Alaskan (name brand) in the blue all over bottle. The bottles which are solid blue should normally be non gas-
19. Try the Ukrainian borscht. It is soo good as well as most soups. Also try at least one ukrainian beer. They are very good but very strong.
20. Take lots of pictures and lots of video and then take more. This is your children's history. Just do it you will be glad you did.
21. Take two pepto caplets in the morning and evening to reduce the risk of traveler's intestinal bugs.
22. Bring enough contact supplies if you wear lenses. We could not find solution anywhere outside of Kyiv.
some recent picturesI added a few pics from the summer. They are in the album entitled summer 2006.
Some are of the boys in tball and when they went to a small festival
Some are when we went to my dad's for a get together and they played in the creek
and a few of Oksana pre-surgery day
Enjoy
Leanna~ Success!!!Well it was a long two days and even longer night. But finally at six tonite Oksana the on the go and happy littile girl was released from the hospital. It did not start out very well. She was miserable after her recovery and while Larry was holding her she vomited up a LOT of blood! She did it again later in her bed, which was a bit of cause for concern. But they gave her some more meds and she slept the rest of the evening. And after a miserable first evening of vomiting blood and crying, by this morning she was ready to go! But they wanted to observe her longer because of the vomiting and her being quit lethargic.
But this afternoon she did NOT want to be in the bed or room and she wanted to walk the halls and greet everyone over and over and over... Her surgery was a complete success and besides a bit of a bloody nose there are no after side effects. Her little arm bands (that are restraining her arms), she is very proud of along with her ankle (identity) bracelet.
As we spent these past 30+ hours side by side, we worked on establishing a true bond and today she turned to me and said mommy. Now she has been saying mama and mom, but this mommy was brand new. The nurse said we needed a video camera and I agreed. Now she says mom non - stop to me knowing that I am mom and will get a reaction after working on it the past two days. Very cool.
But the most interesting part was when I was taken from my quite and cozy private room. they awoke me out of my deep sleep and moved me to a room for more "Like" patients. It was 4:00 am and I was not happy about sharing a room or moving to a "like" patient room.... the other parent (dad) was snoring like a freight train- oh bonus room. Than they said can we get you anything ( now this is like 430 am ) and I cordially looked at them with a big bright no thank you! (although I was thinking can I get the private room back??) Anyway I did not go back to sleep thanks to the train man and his poor daughter who was whimpering in pain. They left early, and to my complete delight, they brought in another family all talking on their cell phones around mid morning. I am a bit worried what "like" patients might actually mean now LOL.
I am exhausted. Watching tv and talking on the phone for hours is not as fun as it sounds in a hospital room!! Thank you for all the prayers -Oksana is doing great!
Leanna~ Surgery todayWe had a nice easy going weekend as a family. We were able to go swimming two days and the boys loved it. Oksana went in for the first time as well. She was a bit unsure about the whole thing but she was a trooper. Think it just might have been too cold this time. I was unable to get any pictures becuase I had not yet gotten my digital camera back from where I left it. We did not attend any fireworks either because the boys just do not like the loud noise. They did get to see "over the hedge" which they really enjoyed.
I am taking Oksana to the hospital this morning for her cleft surgery. I got her up last night late to give her some milk so she would have a bit in her tummy. I really hate this part about being a parent. Taking a young child to the hospital is rough and I feel the biggest sympathy for any parent whose child needs long term care or has a long term illness. They are brave and strong souls. So please pray for Oksana for a speedy recovery!
